Angela Instruments 1999 Edition Stereo Single Ended Triode Connected EL34 Tube Amplifier. I commissioned Joseph Esmilla to design and wire this amp in 1999 for our series of free HOW TO website projects. I, Steve Melkisethian, punched out the chassis in my garage using only a drill press and simple hand tools. The chassis was then professionally finished in black textured Sherwin Williams Polane T by G&G Industrial Finishers in Baltimore. The chassis is based on a simple Hammond aluminum box with a cover plate on the bottom. The amp uses two 5691/6SL7s on the front end, two triode connected EL34 power tubes and a GZ37 rectifier tube. The amp works fine with any N.O.S. USA 6SL7. For power tubes I usually used skinny German 'Siemens' EL34s. If you can't find a GZ37 you can use a 5U4GB or even an import J.J. GZ34. I'm selling this amp without tubes. Transformers include two Hammond 125ESE, Hammond 272HX power transformer and a Hammond 193G choke. Coupling caps are Angela Aluminum Foil Paper in oil .22/630VDC. Other parts include some Nichicon Muse capacitors, some Riken Ohm resistors, some Sprague Atom electrolytic capacitors, Kimber copper/Teflon internal wire and a number of non-fancy but good caps and resistors. There are two Mil. Spec. locking hum balance pots installed. We included a stereo volume pot on the front end so you can run a line level source like a CD player straight in. Speaker connection is made on simple, inexpensive binding posts. Audiophile grade input jacks are by Kimber. Power output is around three watts; for most adult listeners that's more than enough power to fill a moderate sized room with beautiful music but only if you have efficient speakers. I used this amp mainly with large Audio Note Speakers and Pro Ac Response Twos. If you have large horn speakers like Altec Voice Of The Theater I guarantee you'll have lots of fun. Low power single ended amplifiers excel at playing unamplified or lightly amplified small group music; classical chamber, folk, acoustic jazz, real country music, early rock 'n roll, etc. If you're into bombastic or overamplified music played loud you should probably buy something else. This amp has worked faithfully since 1999. See the HOW TO pages of the Angela Instruments website for schematic, more pictures and commentary.
