Anthony DEVIS (1729-1816) Landscape Drawing

This is work on paper by Anthony Devis depicting men at work along a rocky coast with a castle on a hill. It is initialed by the artist at the bottom right, and there is an annotation below the mat stating "A Hint from Buck's View of Mannorbier Castle in Pembrokeshire by Devis". Devis was a remarkably successful landscape painter, especially during the period from 1760-1780, when he produced numerous topographical drawiings and paintings. He worked in both oils and watercolours, the latter really being line drawings with delicate washes of colour, as evidenced in our offered drawing. His works appear in several museums, including the Courtauld Institute of Art, the Harris Museum and Art Gallery, the National Museums and Galleries of Wales, theTate Gallery, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. One drawing at the Tate is particularly similar in appearance to the one we are offering. This work has an attached mat, and on the verso has three stickers that are nor visible when viewing the drawing, but are certainly worth noting. The work measures approximately 6.5" x 9" (16.5cm x 23cm) without the mat. It will make a wonderful addition to the collector of fine European art.
