Description

LOT W-11

For your consideration is a wonderful, rare find! This outstanding Victorian antique lamp was purchased from an antique dealer over 25 years ago and has been in storage ever since. This is not a reproduction. I have included numerous pictures so you can verify this for yourself.

The Gone with the Wind lamp is not electrified. It is an oil/kerosene lamp and has not been altered/converted. The hand painted glass, brass and cast iron are in excellent antique condition.

The lamp measures approximately 17” to the top of the flame spreader, measurement from bottom of foot to top of top shade is 23 ½” ; if including the chimney, 24” .The circumference of the top shade is 40” (about 12 ¾” diameter) and 8" high, the lower glass base is 21 ½” circumference at its widest (about 6 ¾” in diameter). Please let me know if you need more details.

As you can see the glass shade and base each have a display of a fully opened rose of deep purplish red on the front side and a rosebud on the backside. All are beautifully detailed and have a painterly quality even down to the detailing on the leaves. There is a soft transition of the background colors from cream to purplish to bluish green. I believe there is a “J” on the lower right side of the top shade which would be an artist’s signature; please view the second last photo. I was only able to find two very insignificant spots that may be paint loss; see last photo. The small spot on the back of the top shade and more like a rub mark on the base near the top of the backside. No cracks or hairlines. Some minor “flee bites” along the rim but they look original to the manufacture since they have color.

The font/burner unit is also outstanding! No dings, dents or damage. The wick dial is marked MADE IN U.S. OF AMERICA. It turns easily raising the wick. The filling cover for the font turns easily and is all in tact.

The flame spreader is marked FOSTORIA PATENTED SEPT 9 90APR 11 93 APR 30 95, which dates it to ca. 1895. It shows discoloration as would be expected, no damage.

The floral relief design, cast iron raised footing, is all in tact with no damage and is marked “213”.

The chimney is not original and we don’t recommend us sending it to you unless you really want it. It is rather fragile and a taller chimney would probably be more appropriate.

We have a professional packer that will prepare the lamp for shipping or you are welcomed to do a pick-up by appointment if you are local. We are located just outside Milwaukee, WI approx. 1 1/2hr. north of Chicago.
