A fine, hand-colored map of the Ancient World from William Hughes:

Publisher London: Whittaker & Co., Ave Maria Lane; George Bell & Sons, York Street, Covent Garden.  1874 (with some maps published earlier).

This is the very scarce British Edition of a well-known American-published college-level textbook of the period. It is printed on much higher quality paper than is the American edition. In addition, the maps are slightly smaller, and the hand colouring is more carefully done. The quality of the engraving, and thus the printing on each map, is also remarkably high.

Each map is an original. I removed them from the atlas myself.

Sheet 31.8 cm x 24.2 cm

Margins:  varies from 1.0 cm to 1.7 cm

These maps were all 'tipped in' to the atlas. There is a single fold in the centre of each map. They were all hand-colored in outline at the time of publication. The date of publication is printed neatly in the centre of the bottom margin of each map. Of course, these maps are printed on one side only.

Condition Excellent. The maps are clean and bright. There is no foxing, no soiling, and no tears. Even the backs of these maps are clean and bright. The only thing that compromises these maps in any way is that they all bear a small, faint library stamp in the lower left corner of each map. These are quite unobtrusive, as can be seen in the scanned image below.
Remarks

Unlike their American counterparts, these maps are very scarce indeed. This is only the second time I've seen them available in the past several years. They are truly beautiful maps that will look great framed.
