El Morro LIGHTHOUSE
the Castillo de San Felipe del Morro
by
National Light and Electric Company
(with original name label "Morrow Castle" see top center of lamp in picture)
This lighthouse is on the Fort at Old San Juan, in a National Park.
In my opinion, it is the most unusual lighthouse I have ever seen, and a beautiful symbol of Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico's most picturesque military structure, El Morro took over 200 years to build.
This motion lamp is so scarce it is not even pictured in the Collectors Guide of Motion Lamps, By" Sam and Anna samuelian although this frame type with other less rare scenes are. It is the only one of these I have ever found.
This exquisite Art Deco wood framed Motion Lamp from aproximately 1930 features a stunning evening scene of a bay view of the Fortress and old lighthouse! There is the bow of a boat partially visible off to the right, and the stone walls show fine detail all the way down to the stone foundation as it dissapears into the ocean..
When turned on this lamp begins moving almost immediately making the water appear to ripple and flow before you as the lighthose beacon flashes and glows with little beams of light shooting out from it at regular intervals.. It is very hard to capture it's beauty in pictures.. It is much better in person. It is absolutley a treasure, and one you will want to hold on to and pass down from generation to generation..
This lamp is picture framed and measures 10 1/2 inches tall by 8 1/2 inches wide and aproximately 5 inches deep. It is a wonderful size for mantle, shelf or executive desk.. It is very impressive!
The Art Deco Styling is also fabulous!
The picture is clear and bright, as pictured for you to the right of this description
The lamp is in excellent Original condition for it's age, containing all it's original parts and original cord and plug. Front panel picture looks very good. It has had some very minor touch up for restoration. Spinner is in very good condition with original bearing. It spins great from heat of low watt clear bulb. Frame is excellent and the Original name plate is in great condition as well. Rear housing looks very good and also has original top! The cord and plus show wear, and I would replace for safety, but as lamp is 100% original I will leave it as it is, it does work though! This lamp contains two glass panels, one with picture and one with paint in pattern to create motion effects. The front panel looks excellent and solid. The rear panel has cracks that have been repaired/mended. I removed the panel and it felt solid in my hand. I was unable to detect any negative affects when viewing lamp on.. They were absolutely invisible, so I would say this will not detract from this lamps extremely high value as it is repaired and does NOT affect motion or visual effects at all... That is my strong opinion.
For a lamp that is about 80 years old, it looks excellent to me, and the frame is clean and shows beautifully!
The colors are lovely, and the art looks very impressive whether on or off..
If you want a true antique art deco peice of art that is also living art, this fine rare picture will be the best conversation piece you own! Everyone will comment on it when they see it, and will be amazed to see your antique print come alive when it is on and in action!
... some El Morro History facts for you ...
SAN JUAN, P.R.--- Overlooking the steep north coast of Puerto Rico, 181 feet above the sea and, on a clear night, projecting its powerful beacon 24 miles northward into the Atlantic Ocean, El Morro Light has been guiding ships into San Juan Bay for more than 160 years.
Officially known as “Puerto San Juan Light” in U.S. Coast Guard publications, the light’s moniker comes because it sits atop Fuerte San Felipe del Morro, the vast Spanish fortress that has protected San Juan’s harbor since colonial times.
San Juan is the second oldest European-settled city in the Western Hemisphere. Discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage in 1493 and settled by Juan Ponce de León in 1508, only Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, preceded it.
As the first major island that sailors reached when arriving to the New World on the voyage from Spain, San Juan became the most important port and defensive fortification in the region.
Its full name is the Its full name is the Castillo de San Felipe del Morro, but it is better known by El Morro, which means "promontory." El Morro only fell once, in 1598, when the Earl of Cumberland took the fortress by land. Perched on the northwestern-most point of Old San Juan, this daunting citadel must have been an intimidating sight to enemy ships. In fact, in its long history, El Morro was never defeated by a naval attack. El Morro only fell once, in 1598, when the Earl of Cumberland took the fortress by land.
First-time visitors to Old San Juan simply cannot leave without visiting El Morro. The fortress is one of the most impressive structures on the island, encapsulating Puerto Rico’s role as a guardian of the New World. Within these walls, you can feel the awesome power this bastion of defense once commanded, and you can bear witness to nearly half a century of military history that began with the Spanish conquistadores and ended with World War II.
Did You Know?
Three lighthouses have stood on El Morro's 6th level in its long history. The first one was built in 1846. A second one replaced it in 1876. It took a direct hit during the 1898 bombardment by Sampson's US fleet, but the brick foundation was salvaged in 1899 to erect the lighthouse in use today.
Please ask any questions you may have affecting your desire to own this fine lamp before you bid. I welcome all comments as well.
****Here is an added fact .. One of the reasons this lamp is also special is that the Lighthouse name on it is Morrow Castle, which is not the proper name, but a non Spanish Speaking Interpretation of the name.. The lamp was made in North America and English Speaking artisans put the name they thought it was... not the true Spanish name.. I was told this actually makes the lamp more valuable.. I just thought it was interesting..****

The clear square is made to allow light to shine through for lighthouse beacon light The clear and blue bands are all designed for the light to come through in certain ways.. This is just as it is supposed to look..
