Remember the concept of "common sense?" Well . . Without jumping headfirst into a discussion of Epistemological Particularism, let's just say the application of common sense is the method by which our ancestors came up with some of their best "inventions." One of these was a metal box for storing your slippers near the fireplace. Stepping into a pair of warm house slippers in a drafty old house would have been one of the true joys of life in the days before central heating.
This one is a real beauty, and it dates back to the late Victorian / Early Arts & Crafts Period. Let's say 1890-1915. I know that's a fairly wide range, but it's simply the best I can do. It is hand hammered and chased brass over tin. What say we take a close look?
Without question, the three-masted sailing ship is most appropriate for pieces from the early Arts & Crafts Movement.
The lid measures 14 1/4" by 10", and the box is 7 1/2" tall at the back - nearly 5" at the front. It's exactly the size you'd want for holding a couple pair of comfy slippers: His'n Hers, probably.
It's done is deep relief - very deep relief.
Here at 341, I have two "Prime Directives:"
First: I never, under any circumstances, use a reserve, and everything starts at $9, sometimes even less.
Second: I don't clean, repair, or otherwise monkey around with anything. I push enough dust aside to note any flaws, but if I discovered it in some dusty attic, you can look forward to a little dust on it when it gets to your house. If it has a flaw or a wart, I'll tell you about it. So rest easy and have some fun. Why not place a little tiny bid right now so's you don't forget about it later.
The tin interior retains its original green paint. There is a little surface rust, which is to be expected, but it's nothing troubling by any stretch of the imagination.
You'll notice a few minor dents and dings, but again, they are nothing to get your panties all in a twist over. It's an authentic antique piece with appropriate signs of use.
That's the bottom. I didn't find any markings - didn't really expect I would.
I know a couple things for sure. First, you'll seldom (if ever) find another one of these old slipper boxes in this condition even if you burn up several tanks of $4 gas running around hither and yon. Second: You're going to be absolutely thrilled.
GOOD LUCK
