This is 100% old and original and not a recently made tourist piece that has been buried in a dung heap like many of the modern reproductions offered as original items on eBay and elsewhere-see my feedback and guarantee and then bid with confidence. This is a rare original Poto Culture sword from central Africa near the Congo River. I have heard these called Salampasu swords. This one is similar to examples from Fischer's book. The Poto people were victims of slavers and were also involved in the slave trade. This is a very good example of the type of sword from that important and historical period. This culture produced some of the best quality weapons in Africa and as you can see from the style of this piece, their craftsmanship was superior given the technology and material they had. This sword is from a very old collection. The former owner was quite knowledgeable and collected only the best examples he could find. The overall length is about 22 1/4". The blade is about 4 5/8" wide at the widest point. It is very nicely carved as seen in the close up photos. The patina is very dark as is common with ancient African arms. The grip is wood with a flat iron band at the top and a bulbous pommel which is deteriorated slightly with age as you can see. See the last photo which shows some of the blade from the collection I will be listing on eBay-I also have several spears and a magnificent bamboo Ngombe shield from Zaire. I usually list US, German and Japanese military items. From time to time I also list general antiques like this neat old piece. Please click on View sellers other items above to see my other items. Thank you and good luck in your bidding.
