Fine & important Anglo-Indian, carved sandalwood and ivory sewing box, circa 1820.
This is a large and very finely carved sandalwood and ivory sewing box, from the British Colonial period in India, from Vizagapatam, circa 1820. The sewing box is of sarcophagus shape, the hinged top is raised and edged in ivory and is inlaid, carved with flowers and a monkey and mouse, below the lid slopes on four sides and has the same carving and is also inlaid and edged with ivory. The base is also profusely carved and has the same ivory edging and inlay, the box stands on four bronze hairy paw feet, inside the box has a fitted intreior with 13 compartments, with carved lids. This is a large box at 14" wide x 10" deep x 6" tall, condition is good with a few minor losses to the inlay. A very fine and rare Anglo-Indian carved sandalwood & ivory sewing box circa 1820.
