Catlin writes:

The Eagle Dance is a very pretty scene, which is got up by their young men, in honor of that bird, for which they seem to have a religious regard.  This picturesque dance was given by twelve or sixteen men, whose bodies were chiefly naked and painted white, with white clay, and each boy holding in his hand the tail of the eagle, while his head was also decorated with an eagle’s quill.  Spears were stuck in the ground around which the dance was performed by four men at a time, who had simultaneously, at the beat of the drum, jumped up from the ground where they had all sat in rows of four, one row immediately behind the rest, and taking their seats, ready to come up again into their turn, after each of the other sets had been through the same forms.

Being offered is an AUTHENTIC ANTIQUE ENGRAVING by George Catlin from North American Indians being Letters and Notes on their Manners, Customs, and Conditions, written during Eight Years Travel amongst the Wildest Tribes of Indians in North America, 1832-1839.

Significance of Body of Work:  The Chatto & Windus London 1876 edition of Catlin’s two volume masterpiece is referenced as The First Edition of this ethnographic classic with illustrations printed in color. There was an earlier edition with hand-tinted etchings that rarely surfaces today.  Some scholars regard George Catlin  as “one of the most admirable observers of manners who ever lived among the aborigines of America,”  compiling “during eight years of travel and adventure among the wildest and most remarkable tribes of that time” hundreds of paintings and drawings which he proposed would show the world the material culture of the savages.”  Western historian, Harold McCracken writes, “No individual has contributed so much, of such great importance; no individual as had a greater influence upon the Western Americana art, literature and history of our country than George Catlin.”  Traversing by horseback throughout the Southwest preserving both the Wilderness and the Native Americans he encountered via his paintings and his journal, George Catlin provided what became the only visual and/or material history of many of the tribes. He amassed a wealth of material culture from the various tribes with the intent of displaying these collectibles with his paintings. Many of the items were the clothes and paraphernalia worn by the models in his paintings. Due to the U S Government Policy regarding the indigenous peoples, for varying reasons many tribes completed vanished or were banished shortly after Catlin’s visit, others were scattered far from their homeland, forcedly removed and restricted to reservations where their native culture was forbidden.  His images appear  time and again throughout History Books including Narratives of Native Americana, U S History, The Old West, Ethnographic Studies, and Government Publications.

Matting services:  These plates frame nicely as an 8”x 10” or as an 11”x 14.”   We will gladly mat and mount your plate as an 8” x 10” for an additional fee of $14.00 per plate.  Or we can provide an 11”x14” matting for an additional fee of $17.00 per plate.  Mats and backings are acid free-archival to enhance the life of your plate.  We recommend using a color coded mat identical to the toned plate, thereby complimenting the plate and enlarging the appearance of the plate.  Email us for details.
