Antique Bilston/Staffordshire Enamel Thimble/Tape

English * Circa 1770

This Rare little piece combines a thimble and a tape measure. The thimble has a threaded rim and screws tightly onto the bottom of the tape. Both are decorated with hand painted flowers over rose colored enamel on copper. Bilston enamel is also sometimes called South Staffordshire enamel.

There are two small chips along the top edge of the thimble and one on the tape measure (at the edge on on side where the tape comes out). The enameling on the top of the tape was white and is mostly missing due to the action of the little crack that winds in the tape. There is an unmarked silk ribbon tape inside. Screwed together, it measures 1 5/8" long. The thimble is 3/4" high and is about an American size 7. It's a scarce little piece and would make a colorful addition to an antique enamel collection.
