A 18th century antique beautifully hand-written and designed Buddhist handwritten manuscript leaf, from Tibet (the homeland of the Dalai Lama), containing Sutra or the canonical scriptures, which are the records or interpretations of the oral teachings of Gautama Buddha. Size is 3 in. x 8 in. (= 74 mm x 211 mm). Made of thick, hand-made paper, that shows stain and discoloration due to age and use; all the text is intact. This leaf (shown on 1st and 2nd images) has numerous symbols and geometric designs. On the front side there is a black letter written at the top of the column with three geometrically rotating designs. The back of the leaf has a full page of text. The winner of this manuscript will receive a complimentary copy of the Dalai Lama's 1989 speech accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, including the criticisms of the Chinese government that are often omitted. This is an original manuscript, not a reproduction. Its authenticity is 100% guaranteed.
Sutra or Sutta, literally means a rope or thread that holds things together, and more metaphorically refers to an aphorism (or line, rule, formula), or a collection of such aphorisms in the form of a manual. It is derived from the verbal root siv-, meaning to sew (these words, including Latin suere and English to sew). In Buddhism, the term "sutra" refers generally to canonical scriptures that are regarded as records of the oral teachings of Gautama Buddha. These teachings are assembled in the second part of the Tripitaka which is called Sutra Pitaka. There are also some Buddhist texts, such as the Platform Sutra, that are called sutras despite being attributed to much later authors. Some scholars consider that the Buddhist use of sutra is a mis-Sanskritization of sutta, and that the latter represented Sanskrit s?kta (well spoken). The Pali form of the word, sutta is used exclusively to refer to Buddhist scriptures, particularly those of the Pali Canon.
