The Ault and Wiborg Ink Company:
The Ault & Wiborg Company, was an leading manufacturer of printing inks
and dyes and pigments, based in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The company was founded in 1878, by Levi Addison Ault, a French-Canadian
from Ontario, Canada, and by Frank Bestow Wiborg, from Cleveland, Ohio, born
into a family that emigrated to Ohio from Norway. Frank Wiborg attended
Chickering Institute, before becoming a salesman for Levi Ault, and then
became Ault's business partner.
This ink and dye company had sales offices in Toronto, London, Buenos Aires,
Shanghai, and Manila.
The company produces much ink for lithography and for letterpress printing.
Robert Hochstetter was a vice president with this company, who changed
his name to Robert Hilton, because of World War I.
Ault and Wibor inks were hugely popular with print shop owners throughout
the U. S. and abroad. Their inks were used for newspapers, magazines, sheet
music, and posters, and were the state-of-the-art choice for any graphic
art professional.
Many leading artists of this era created advertisements for this ink company,
including an 1896 advertising poster by Toulouse-Lautrec, and Art Nouveau
print ads by Will Bradley, E. McKnight Kauffer, and T. M. Cleland. Many of
these landmark Ault Wiborg ads appeared in the Inland Printer magazine.
This ink company was the premier American ink company to provide ink to the
fine press printers of the Arts-and-Crafts era in American print making.
In 1920 Ault & Wiborg sold their dye factories in St. Bernard
and Norwood to Ciba, Geigy and Sandoz of Switzerland. The new dye company
became the Cincinnati Chemical Works. In 1928, Aul sold this ink business
to the International Printing Ink Corp, which becam Interchemical Corp.
Today, Ault is considered the "Father of Cincinnati Parks." He donated
the land that became Ault Park.
This Ault and Wiborg Ink Cupboard:
This ink cupboard is made of oak wood, and is in its original surface, in
very nice condition. The text is painted on the front panel in red
blackletter typography. The cupboard is fastened together with its original
round nails. The cupboard has its original key hole escuthceon and
hinges. There is no key.
The porcelain knob may be a replacement, as this knob seem bright and
un-aged, although there are no other signs of a replaced knob. The back of
the cabinet is its original wood, which is an early type of plywood. The
front panel has a vertical crack through the length of the panel, running
through the letter "n" in the word "inks", and also has 2 cracks through
part of the lenght of that panel.
I purchased this cupboard from an antiques dealer here in Pennsylvania.
