This auction is for an antique children's book
History of the United States in Words of One Syllable Published by George Routledge & Sons, 1884. (Actually, it has words of more than one syllable, but they are broken up to make reading easier. ie ‘Wash-ing-ton’)
The book is inscribed, “To Clarence—Merry Christmas from Nanna, Dec. 25th, 1889”. The next page is inscribed, “ To Lucile and wish you a Crismiss (sic) frome Varna”
The book has 189 pages with many great drawings and woodcuts and covers from Columbus through the Revolutionary and Civil Wars up to Grover Cleveland with "quaint" phrasing of the time such as, "It was the pride of an Indian to have scalps hung at his belt. No one had taught him that this was wrong, and he did not have the Word of God to show him the right way." The narrative also skips from Columbus right to the Pilgrims with no mention of St. Augustine or Jamestown.
The book measures 7 inches wide by 8 ¼ inches tall. The book is in fair condition due to age. The cover is yellowed but in good condition, except that the book has come unglued from the cover at the spine. (see photo). The back fly leaf is torn. Except for the inscriptions noted above, there are no markings on the pages, and the stitching is good.
