Spectacular, antique door salvaged
from an old Victorian in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The door is made of solid Cypress. It features 2 raised
panels on both sides; a ledge with dental molding on the front site; a
leaded, stained glass window; and hardware.
Cypress is the wood of the South because of its rot-resistant quality. It's
a soft wood, but it is quite durable.
The door and window were made some
time between 1895 & 1905, and the hardware was made during the late 1800's.
Window: The leaded glass window has a beveled, diamond-shaped
piece in the center contoured with 4, red, stained glass pieces. The
majority of the window is comprised of triangular and hexagonal shaped,
clear, textured glass pieces, and triangular and diamond-shaped pieces of
amber, stained glass. The perimeter is made up up lavender colored stained
glass pieces. The leaded skeleton is reinforced by 2 horizontal bars,
located on the back side.
Restoration: At the point of salvage the door itself was found in
great shape with only a break in the lower lock stile corner, 2 deadbolt
lock holes, and no hardware. The window was in very rough shape and almost
completely fell apart when we removed it.
Since then, we stripped the
original stain, patched the deadbolt holes and the break, had the
window repaired, and added hardware.
Unfortunately, we didn't have any antique Cypress to patch the
deadbolt holes and break. Instead, we used antique pine, which has a similar
grain.
The window was repaired by a local man, who we could refer you to. We
told him we weren't in a rush to have it fixed, and were more concerned with
having the window properly restored, using old glass. It took him a few
weeks--mostly because he had to find the right glass--but he did an amazing
job! I wish I had a "before" photo to show you just how bad the window was
before he repaired it. He did 2 other windows for us as well and we were
extremely satisfied with all 3 jobs.
Hardware: We added
an exquisite set salvaged from Detroit, Michigan. The set consists of 2 bronze knobs, 2 bronze
escutcheons, 1 iron mortise lock with bronze
face plate, and 1 working key--we could make more; see details under
"Additional Services" below. All bronze parts are solid, heavy, cast
bronze--not stamped or plated iron.
Also included are 2, ornate, copper-plated, ball-tip, cast iron hinges.
We didn't install the hinges because they have a different screw hole
configuration than the original hinges, and we didn't want to make any more
holes in the door in case you didn't like the hinges or preferred to use
your own. If you like the hinges we chose; let us know after the
auction and we will install them.
Condition: The door
is in excellent condition with only minor surface scrapes and scratches; the
hardware is in excellent condition with no breaks, cracks, dents, or heavy
scratches; the lock operates smoothly; and the leading is firm and tight,
and the glass is flawless! The photo of the window in natural light was taken
before we cleaned it, and those black spots you see were only dirt and
buildup.
Width: The door was cut vertically, at some point to
make the door narrower. It was cut unevenly, most likely to accommodate the
settling of the old home. Up to the the point where the hardware is
installed, the door measures 31.5" W; after that it gradually shortens to 30
13/16" at the top. We didn't do anything to it because we didn't know your
situation. If you need the door 30 13/16" or shorter, we'll cut it for you;
if you need the door 31.5" or wider, we'll add it for you. Either service is
included free of charge with the purchase of the door. * Please note that
if we add to the entire width of the door (to make it more than 31.5"), the
addition would be very noticeable if stained, and is only recommended if you
are going to paint the door.
Swing: Once installed, the door would swing inwardly towards
the right.
We have 2 more doors with stained glass, but this one is definitely the
cream of the crop! Once it was finished, I just stood in front of it for a
few minutes just to admire its beauty and to reflect on all of the hard work
that went into restoring it. The hardware looks nice in the
photos, but the door and window look much better in person. You will not be
disappointed!
* This door and everything with it is a package. We will not sell the
glass or hardware separately.
