This book is illustrated throughout with the author’s own detailed sketch drawings and text that is hand-printed. Here is a book to delight not only the lover of Americana and antique furniture, but the enthusiast of creative book design as well.

EARLY AMERICAN FURNITURE by Kevin Callahan, Weathervane Books, NY, 1975.

The author’s introduction states that this book was written “to give the novice collector some insight into the field of early American country furniture from the 18th century until about 1840. Most of the items illustrated aren’t museum pieces, but pieces I own or have owned at one time; others belong to friends who were kind enough to let me come into their homes and sketch their furniture. Country furniture is informal, but certainly not primitive, although it was made outside the major style centers of the day, it has a style and a strength all its own. The woods used were the native woods found in the area, chiefly maple, cherry, pine and walnut. It was sturdy furniture, made for daily use and a surprising amount of it has survived and remains in daily use two hundred years later, a fact which surely speaks well of the early furniture makers.” Country furniture, unlike Chippendale or Sheraton, is affordable and available, and the author notes that the collector or buyer is “not just buying furniture, but investing in a commodity whose supply is dwindling and whose price is constantly rising.”

8.5” x 11” hardback with dust cover in very good condition. 157 pages.
