Antique English Oak Barley Twist Fire screen Artillery
“UBIQUE - Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt” Gunner’s Motto
Direct from England, this listing is for a beautiful LARGE antique fire screen or stand. The stand is solid oak with a dark, rich finish and lovely barley twist side posts topped with turned ball finials and a scalloped crown with cut-out handle.
The elegant feet are gracefully curved and arched, providing stability and support for this lovely piece, which also has its original solid wood back.
Of
course I purchased this screen for its dark, classic barley twist style
AND for the gorgeous hand needlework………I will admit I had to research
the Latin inscription with the canon design.
“In
1883, artillery units of the Royal Artillery were given two distinct
privileges, the first being the installment of an official “overall”
motto, which has since been adopted by almost all units of the Royal
Artillery, this being the motto:
“Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt”, which translates to “Where Right and Glory Lead Us”.
The second privilege, and one that is unique in the Armed Services, is the installation of the Battle Honor, “UBIQUE” which translates as “everywhere”.
This
symbolically linked the “Gunners” as the enlisted artillerymen are
known, with the Battle Honors of all major engagements they have fought
in…………”
Certainly
this would be a delightful addition for any British military collector,
and of course, for all my barley twist customers, some additional
provenance for a lovely piece!!
PLEASE NOTE: This listing is ONLY for the fire screen. The
fireplace fender shown in some of the photos is listed separately in my
eBay store……along with other fireplace screens and items from England!!
As always, all of my antiques are hand selected from European container shipments. I
do not purchase in bulk, but prefer to individually purchase the items,
with each piece selected for its unique characteristics and quality.
Measurements:
32”H x 27 ½” x 9” (larger than most!!).
Condition:
The screen is in good condition for its age, with normal signs of age and use, scratches, dings, and other imperfections. The front cover is free from cracks and chips and the hand needlework has lovely colour and craftsmanship. The
lower right corner has some darkening from age (see photos) but nothing
that detracts from the beauty and unique nature of the piece!!
I only offer carefully selected
quality pieces, and always provide multiple photos and written
information. I encourage you to email me with any questions you might
have prior to bidding. Please keep in mind antique furniture should be
purchased for its uniqueness, higher quality material and craftsmanship
and antique patina, charm and character.
Shipping:
Professional packaging, shipping and insurance on this item will be $55.00 (lower 48 states only). All my antique furniture is professionally packaged for shipment by UPS, fully insured and delivered directly to your front door!!
