The author has investigated the relationships which existed in different periods and places between craftsmen, designers and workshop factory owners. The author "shows that most of the major developments in furniture design since the middle ages should be attributed to designers rather than craftsmen. The study of particular instances reveals that many current generalizations about the influence of industrialized production and the decline of craftsmanship in the nineteenth century are due for revision." The author has selected fifty different individuals and their works to "show the astonishing wide range of people who have made contributions to the development of furniture design; they include simple artisans, architects, sculptors, businessmen, art collectors, antiquaries, a soldier and a Baptist minister, many of whom emerge from contemporary documents as living human personalities." This book will assist the appraiser, dealer, or collector in attributing the designers and manufacturers of antique furniture.
