Antique French Clock 18th - 19th C. Ormolu Silk Susp.

Fine late 18th to early 19th Century gilt bronze French clock with fine French two train silk suspension movement and beautiful sounding fine French silver bell, strikes on the hour and half hour. Runs great, keeps perfect time. The movement has just been cleaned by a Master clockmaker. Roman numeral chapters and minute markers surround the face which display classically beautiful delicate ornate and finely crafted French hour and minute hands. The French Romantic Period themes of bold individual heroism can be appreciated in its unusually fine and artistic chasing of the case (see photos)which includes minutely detailed crowning noble horse mounted knight in all his grand suit of armor, above sword, helmet and learned book, representing the knightly virtues of bravery, wisdom and gallantry. The case also includes intricate roses and garlands. This bronze clock stands on the very rare matching carved gilt wood stand with salmon colored silk top base - all original. The period of French Romanticism (circa 1790 – 1850) runs throughout the First Empire to beyond Charles X. While the Romantic style of the clock case dates its creation from late 18th to early 19th Century its fine silk suspension movement suggests late 1790s. Comparable prices include $7,950 for the Poseidon Ormolu mantel clock sold at Dee Atkinson & Harrison in Driffield, England on February 16h, 2009. Circa 1790s - early 1800s.
