Antique Gilded “Ormolu” Mantle Clock ~ French Japy Freres
Listed for your consideration is my Mother’s antique gilded mantle clock; I believe the gilding falls in the arena of “ormolu”. The clock maker is Japy Freres ~ France.
The trademark is stamped on the back. The small text is difficult to read; I think it reads “Japy Frères & Cie, Med D’ Honneur”.
I do not know the serial numbers, because I did not want to damage the clock by taking it apart.
The pendulum has engraved text on one side. At the top there is the letter “P” in a shape that is similar to a “spade”; at the bottom the text reads “MADE IN ENGLAND”.
The key has engraved text on one side. Text at the top reads “MADE IN ENGLAND”; in the middle, the letter “P” sits within a figure similar to a “spade”; the numeric symbol “7” sits below this.
The movements work when my Mother winds the key, but not for long periods of time. She said that the clock needs cleaned and adjusted.
There is no glass on the front; the clock face is hard and shiny.
I have no idea how one correctly measures a clock ~ my measurements reflect the widest spans. Approximate measurements are: 13” wide; 4” deep; and 14 ¼ high.
The clock has not traveled unscathed, as is evident in the photos. I don’t see any cracks or signs of repair in the metal. The gilding shows wear/loss, and there are spots on the clock face which may disappear with a good cleaning.
My description and images don’t perfectly capture the hues/details/flaws, but they present a good overview.
