Antique Havergal Christmas & New Year's Hymn and Poetry Booklet 1886 Excellent
Frances Ridley Havergal (1836-1879) was an English poet and hymn writer. Began writing verse at age of seven. Her most widely known hymn is "Take My Life and Let It Be." Also wrote the words for "Like A River Glorious," "I Gave My Life for Thee," and "Who Is on the Lord's Side?" She published several volumes of poems and hymns as well as prose writings.
In amazing condition, this Havergal is a must-have for antique collectors. It is 7 pages of Christmas and New Year's verses that are representative of that time period. There are about 15 separate verses. The front cover has an actual photo of Francis Ridley Havergal dressed in period clothing. The photo is mounted on heavy card and the mounted to the cover page.
The card measures 5" wide by 6-1/4" in length. The outside cover is similar to a thick poster paper, with the inside pages being a smooth heavy printing paper. The verses are printed in silver ink, while the cover is stamped or gilt with what would appear to be actual silver and is tarnished. The pages and cover are bound with thread, and hand tied at the pages center.
There are no torn, smudged or written on pages. It does show minor signs of age, but the entire card is in what we would consider near-perfect condition for being about 123 years old.
Note: The darker pages are representative of actual color, and all pages are the same color.
