Antique Engraving Commodore Sir George Back HMS TERROR

Antique mounted engraving identified as Commodore George Back, British Navigator and author of The Perils of the H.M.S. Terror. There is a printed note attached to front border which reads: "Sir George Back 1796-1878...Knighted by Queen Victoria 1839...British explorer recognized for daring in Canadian and Arctic Explorations. He explored The Great Fish River to its mouth in Hudson Bay. It was renamed Back River. . . wrote "Perils and escapes of H. M. S. Terror 1836-7". The way this is mounted I do not know if it is an antique photo copy of the engraving or exactly how it is reproduced but the mountboard it is on look circa early 1900s.

This mounted photo/engraving is from the estate of a descendant of the Back, Chapell, Howard,Turner, Weaver, Wetmore, Newcomb, Swift, and Young, and families who were prominent members of the Connecticut, Massachussetts, New York, and Washington, D.C communities from the 1600s when they arrived on the Mayflower until the 20th Century.
