Antique ONSLOW American Woman Lady Portrait Painting NR |
THIS IS A NO RESERVE AUCTION !!! You are bidding on an Antique Portrait Oil Painting in Gilded Frame. This piece is a RARE FIND due to its size, age and beauty. It dates back to the earlier part of the 1900s and is signed by VERY WELL listed American artist from New York Gordon Onslow Ford and is of the American School. This is a rare find because its some of his earlier work. who also studied and part of the Royal British Acadamy. This is one of the best listed artists Gordon Onslow Ford was born in Wendover, England in 1912. Influenced by family members, his painting career began at an early age. His grandfather was a well-known Elizabethan sculptor, and his aunt exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy of London. Shortly after the death of his father in 1926, Ford began studies at the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth at age fourteen. He also attended the Dragon School in Oxford and the Royal Naval College at Greenwich.
Following several trips to Paris while in the Navy, Ford decided to pursue art, studying with Andre Lhote and Fernand Leger. Ford joined Surrealist groups in Paris, London, and New York during the years 1938 to 1943, and preoccupied himself with painting nature and marine scenes, as well as portraits. During the summer of 1939, Ford invited a few friends, including Andre Breton, Jacqueline Lamba, Yves Tanguy, Roberto Matta, Esteban Frances, and Kay Sage, to a chateau at Chemilleu that he had rented near the Switzerland border. Here they spent time painting, reading poetry, and exchanging ideas. Neighbor Gertrude Stein was a frequent visitor.
He returned to England in 1940 after the beginning of World War II. It was after this period that female personages began to appear in his works. This feminine aspect would later play an important part in many of his paintings ('Temptation of the Painter', 'Propaganda for Love'). Shortly thereafter, Ford moved to New York where he lectured on surrealism and automatism at the New School for Social Research. Concurrently, he created surrealist exhibitions attracting many New York painters who would later become the first abstract expressionists. As a Surrealist, he was initially interested in dreams, recording and making sketches of his own dream experiences. Only later would he realize that it was difficult, if not impossible, to paint dreams. I have ever brought to market with some of his work going well over $200,000 dollars. His work is in Ask Art, Art Price the Davenport and various other art indexes. It is a original Oil on Canvas that depicts a portrait of a beautiful Lady or Woman in a graceful pose and posture. This painting was done with great detail in both color and clarity from the distinctive characteristics of her facial features from the raised cheekbones, to the nose and beautiful eyes. She is wearing a beautiful dress with some floral stitch work at the top and her arm extnded holding her hair with a nice red bonnet at the top of her hair. The background of the painting is also done in a beautiful landscape setting. The artist is very important for his work in Surreal art. The canvas is signed and also has the original plaque which has his name G. Ford Onslow and says R.B.A which stands for Royal British Academy which were people who painted portraits for Royalty and people of Influence. The subject of this piece is beautiful and we believe this to be some of his earlier work so its a rare find. The artist was a TRUE MASTER, because we see great care and SKILL in the painting down to its finest details. With paintings of this caliber you can see the amount of care and attention the artist put into the piece and accomplished quite a bit here. I am not an art expert and took as many pictures as I can to make your own determination as this came from a private estate on Long Island. It has mortise and tenon construction on what we believe is the original stretcher with a beautifully aged patina. There is beautiful age to the piece and it shows natural age with craquelure and some minor imperfections throughout that may need some professional touch up. This piece was VERY WELL made with quality that surpasses ANYTHING that is made today but Please understand that this is an antique and has some minor imperfections on it with its age as stated and shown in the pictures but overall its in excellent shape. This piece overall measures approx 15 1/4 inches wide and approx 17 1/4 inches high.
