ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Here is a great attic find. I believe it to be a doctor's medical bag or a salesman's bag of some sort. On the latch portion of the bag it says, "Pat'd Jan 1869...." There are some other numbers and letters beneath it which I can't make out. The bag is a hard leather. One side of the bag is pushed in but I believe it could be worked back out without cracking the leather. There are no rip's, cracks or holes in the leather. There is a circular metal plate on one side of the bag. If there was anything written on it I can't tell now. The bag is attached to a metal hinged frame. The key to the lock is missing but the latch mechanism does work although it needs some lubrication. The short carrying handle is broken but still attached to the bag. I believe there was a longer strap that attached to the sides at one time but that is missing. All the hardware is riveted to the metal frame and is in good condition.There are 4 metal buttons on the bottom for setting on the floor. On the inside of the bag are two compartments separated by a divider which is held in place by two swing latches attached to the metal frame. There are also two cloth bands that connect in their centers by a metal clasp. The cloth liners are in remarkably good shape with no rips or tears. The size of the bag is 14"L x 9"H x 9"D. This is a super bag for any serious collector.
