Art on a Mission received this unusual piece from an estate and we have done some research on it. There is a hallmark and name of the Pairpoint Mfg. Co, New Bedford, Mass., on the bottom. There is also "Quadruple Plate" and the numbers 1924. This could be a date or style number. We wonder if it was made between 1880 and 1894 due to the hallmark's inclusion of "Mfg." Following is a quote about the Pairpoint Mfg. Co. of New Bedford, MA.
"In 1880, the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company was established on property adjoining the Mount Washington factory. The company was formed specifically to make plated britannia metal products to complement the glasswares of Mt Washington. London-born Thomas J. Pairpoint of the Gorham Company in Providence, R.I., was hired as superintendent of the new company, and his name was given to the venture. Although physically and organizationally distinct, the two companies shared the services of Alexander H. Seabury, president and treasurer of Mt Washington, who also served as treasurer of Pairpoint. This arrangement continued until 1894 when Pairpoint Manufacturing Company purchased Mt Washington. In 1900, the two companies merged under the name Pairpoint Corporation."
The shape of this cup is very unique. The top edge is crimped or ruffled like a piecrust. The sides have indentations and dimples as though it was pinched in manufacturing. It has a sort of Art Noveau look. It is quadruple plated. The bottom is very shiny and we imagine the sides could be brought back to this color.
