A Very Beautiful Perepedil Rug From Caucasus
Woollen pile on woollen foundation, handknotted. This rug is from the Caucasian family of rugs. Perepedil is one of the most distinctive groups of Caucasian rugs, and is named after a village some thirty kilometers north of the town of Kuba, itself. The majority of examples have a main border design of the so-called Kuffic type, and the main field composition usually consists of a series of ram`s horn motifs in the centre of the field, and pointing inwards from each of the long sides. The majority of Perepedil rugs have a dark blue ground. This is a small rug that can be used anywhere in the house, and it is a perfect companion for rooms with traditional or antique furnishing and decor.

SHIRVAN
Ø Shirvan is one of the principal weaving areas of the Caucasus, stretching from the central east coast some three or four hundred kilometres inland. Located within it are several towns, which, according to Kerimov and Schurmann, have become associated with particular designs; these include Bidjov, Marasali, Khila, Surahani, Baku, and Saliani. Shirvan weave is much finer in texture and quality than other Caucasian rugs and this can be very obvious on Shirvan Kilims (flatweave). The Caucasian flat-weaves, like their Anatolian and Persian counterparts, have a boldness of design and vividness of colours, which, many people would argue, are virtues more consistently present in such pieces than in pile-knotted rugs.
Ø In the East, all flat-weaves, regardless of the technique used, are described as Kilim or Gilim.
Ø For more information on Caucasian weavings please refer to `Oriental Rugs` Volume 1 Caucasian by ` Ian Bennett `.
Perepedil Rugs
One design is found consisting of: rams horn in field; horizontal crosses along inner guard band with ends of shorter part of cross bent like coat hanger; animal figure with 6 legs; and many other motifs dispersed through field. Quality can vary from super fine to very rough. The warp, thin weft threads and selvages are of light undyed woolen yarn. Copies are sometimes made in Persia using silk warps.
There is nothing more guaranteed to add a touch of warmth and luxury to your home than an oriental carpet.
These treasures from the East can transform your home or your office in an instant, bringing it drama, colour and ambience of cosiness, regardless of whether you live in a spacious loft, a flat, a normal house or a country mansion.
