A wonderful find in this antique flax hatchel! While I cannot find a signature on this piece I do believe it is Shaker, and also 19th century. The attention to detail, the quality, the diamond shaped metal plates on either end, all points to Shaker. This piece is covered in its original paint, beautiful soft green. The cover for the spikes does not come off easily, I have held it upside down, and it stays put until you pull it off. Holes on either end for hanging, so you can hang it without worrying about the cover falling off. Placement of the nails is symmetrical throughout. The board that holds the spikes is chamfered on both ends and because the wood is a bit convex, the cover ends have been shaped to fit. I have tried to photo this, I hope you can make it out. The only problem with this piece is a couple of the spikes have been bent or shifted and are digging into the inside of the lid. This could easily be a piece used by the Shakers themselves, not made for sale. The lack of a signature also points to the fact that it is early and made for their own use. From what I have read, Shakers were not supposed to sign items they made for their own use, and early on they did not. This piece measures 17 1/2 inches long and 3 3/4 inches wide. It is 4 1/2 inches at its tallest. Even if Shaker is not your thing, this is a wonderful and old flax hatchel. You will not be disapointed!
