is the story of a manufactory, two families, generations of artists, gilders, modelers and their products. Begun by Josiah Spode I and continued by his son Josiah II, the business and works then passed to the Copeland family who for five generations continued the tradition of quality and fine potting started by the Spodes. In 1970 the business reverted to its original name, Spode.” The book covers by chapter: Spode I 1770-1797; Spode II Copeland and Garrett 1797-1830s; Copeland and Garrett to W.T. Copeland 1830s-1868; W.T. Copeland & Sons 1868-1900; Twentieth Century Copeland and Spode 1900-1970; Design and Decorations; Art Directors, Artists and Gilders 1835-1900s; Plans of the Spode Works 1911-1968; and numerous Appendices which cover artists, patterns, shapes, and more.
