Antique Silver Cream Pitcher by Hester Bateman ~ 1780
Offered at a low starting price is a very rare and stunning cream jug by the most famous of the women silversmiths of the 18th century, Hester Bateman. There are four hallmarks at the top under the beaded border and near the beautiful acanthus handle. The first is the small letter 'e' for 1780. Next are the Crowned Leopard Head for the town of London and the Lion Passant for sterling silver. The last, and upside down to the rest, is her silversmith's mark, a scrolled 'HB'. This creamer has a lovely artistic floral design all around.
The size is 4-1/2" high to the top of the handle (11.4 cm high) and the widest part in the center of the pitcher is approximately 2-3/4". It weighs 2-7/8 ounces (81.5 grams/2.6 troy). There are only two very minor flaws to report, a slightly bent edge of the pedestal foot and a tiny split about 3/8" long, near where the handle is joined. Please see the last two pictures.
This wonderful example of Hester Bateman's quality craftsmanship would be a treasured addition to your fine English silver collection.
