I’ve been snooping around in attics, basements, barns and outbuildings for half a century – always on the lookout for antiques – especially those that fall into the category I call Best of Type. Well . . . Last week while unloading an old cupboard in an estate I bought, I found this incredible 109-year-old piece. It’s the nicest “Christmas item” I’ve even discovered.

Is that the cutest thing you’ve ever seen?! (No need to answer. That was rhetorical.)

What makes it even nicer is that it has remained in excellent condition. And there’s something else. The toys! Just keep your panties on. I’ll show you close-ups.

Not counting the elaborate brass corner pieces, the print under glass measures approximately 8” by 6”. The Ullman piece was made by permanently laying the print down to the back of the glass. That’s one reason the colors have remained as strong as the day it was made. (I’ll show you the construction in a jiffy.)

The mark of Ullman Manufacturing Company is in the lower right corner along with the date: 1900. There seems to be an almost cult-like following for Ullman things. I can see why! Can’t you?

OK . . . There’s “cute,” then comes “absolutely adorable.” What comes after that?

Oh dear! That’s the best Santa I’ve ever seen. He’s not as old has I’d thought. Maybe it’s Daddy!

Here at 341, I have two "Prime Directives:"

Second: I don't clean, repair, or otherwise monkey around with anything. I push enough dust aside to note any flaws, but if I discovered it in some dusty attic, you can look forward to a little dust on it when it gets to your house. If it has a flaw or a wart, I'll tell you about it.

He was caught before he finished unpacking. There is what appears to be a German clockwork side-wheeler steamboat. Then you’ll see two sheep in a wooden cage and a pull toy – horse on wheels. Laying on top of Santa’s bag is a white Teddy Bear. (Here’s a little test for you: What is the pattern/origin of the oriental rug?)

As a fire roars in the fireplace, the old elf is stuffing a stocking with even more goodies. He has already put out a doll in a carriage, a bentwood chair and a “rumpapumpum” of a drum.

What a nice study of the turn of the century Victorian household.
