Postal scales were introduced in the mid 19th Century after Rowland Hill (the founder of the postage stamp) suggested that letters should be charged by weight rather than number of pages. After this, most wealthy homes had their own set on the master's desk!

 

This auction is for a set of vintage brass postal scales. The scales have a set of solid brass weights from 4oz to1/4oz. The set has the postal rates in use in1897 on the letter plate. The set has a polished oak base with a patina reflecting its age.  This is supported on 3 bun feet. The scales measure 9" by 4.5" by 4” high,.

 

A highly collectable piece of history....and a superb decoration piece!
