Antique Victorian Stained Glass Window circa 1900 - 1915

This wonderful transom window was salvaged from an old house in Pittsburgh which was slated for demolition. The window hails from about 1900 - 1915, according to the motifs and the frame's joinery. Windows from this era were more pared down than their predecessors from the two decades prior, and have a simple elegance about them. This window is in its original sash. The window has been professionally restored. There are no breaks in the glass or bowing in the window.

The size of the total frame is 48" long by 14" tall. The window alone is about 44 1/4" long x 10 1/4" tall. The sash thickness is 1 5/16" thick. There are two vertical reinforcement bars on the window's interior side, soldered to the panel's leading, and which are notched into the sides of the frame. These rebars are newly installed, because the single rebar it had before in the center was deemed to be inadequate reinforcement for such a long panel. This sash has doweled corner joinery, which you can see on the ends of the frame.

The window's central motif is a shell within a wreath. Both the shell and the wreath motif enjoyed enormous and ubiquitous popularity during the 1880's, clear through to the early 1900's. The shell and wreath are done in clear ripple glass, and the center of the wreath's background is done in clear glass. The background is done in (single chip) gluechip glass, which has a really beautiful ferny pattern running hither and thither all over its surface. The perimeter borders are as follows: innermost and outermost in clear ripple, and intermediate border in clear granite glass. The arched border is a nice touch, and prefigures the (then) up and coming Art Deco era. All in all, a lovely composition, understated and elegant, and a great example of this era.

The window was constructed using lead came, which is soldered at the joints. This window has been professionally restored. The work done on it is as follows: The window was removed from the frame, and the window was soaked and flattened. Many of the joints have been resoldered and patinaed. The window has had its grouting completely redone on both sides and then the window was cleaned. The window was given two new rebars, and the window was replaced in the frame using the same method as was used originally; glaziers tacks at the intersections and new glazing. Then the window was primed grey on the exterior side and primed white on the interior side. A few small nail holes have been patched. Everything else within the window and the frame is completely original, including 100 % of the glass.

All said, this window is a captivating beauty with a charming theme. The window will certainly be the cherished focal point of someone's home. This window is ready to be framed into a wall as a true window, (since it has been regrouted it is weatherproof and waterproof) or it can be hung as a decorative window in front of your existing window.

The buyer pays actual charges for shipping, plus a modest crating fee of $40. to pay for the materials needed to properly pack and crate your window. The window is heavy and will be shipped crated, and securely padded out in layers of bubble wrap and styrofoam sheets. Please check the estimated shipping/ crating costs at the bottom of this page to your zip code. The crating fee is included in the shipping fees at the bottom of this page. Local pickup is also welcome. Insurance is only a few dollars extra and is recommended, but optional. PayPal, Money order, and Cashier's check are all acceptable forms of payment. The window is as described herein, very carefully packed and crated, and guaranteed to be about 100 years old.

I very much appreciate it when buyers pay promptly. Please pay within 6 days of the auction close, otherwise I reserve the right to relist the item or sell to the next highest bidder. After the auction closes, please send me an email to confirm that you are the legitimate high bidder. I usually need 1 or 2 days to crate, weigh, and get shipping charges figured out, then I will email you with the total payment needed, at which point you can pay. Or if you'd rather pay right away, you can use the estimated shipping/crating figure (calculated shipping feature) at the bottom of this page. Your window will be shipped the next business day after the payment is received. Please keep leaded windows out of reach of children, and wash hands thoroughly after touching the leads. Lead is a potential health hazard if the proper care is not observed. Please check my feedback and bid with confidence. Don't forget this auction closes on SUNDAY AFTERNOON/ EVENING. Thank you!
