Rocketbrain's Review
In the history of humanity many cusps or
tipping points have undoubtedly occurred, but perhaps, though it is a romantic
idea, no more profound or significant critical point occurred in our history
than that of the point at which we, as tribes, as individuals, and as a species,
decided that the evolution of pleasing sounds and forms, the art of form and
sound – of art and music – had intrinsic value in giving us context, feelings, a
perspective on a positive and exciting life, and a way to connect between
generations.
The art of making musical instruments has evolved from simply gourds and hollow
objects that resonate or oscillate in some way, to the highly evolved art of
making stringed musical instruments in which the smallest factor such as
coatings, woods, thinness or thickness of resonating chamber materials and the
asymmetry of the same, have evolved experimentally to an art that allows these
refined instruments to, in the right hands, make music that makes us entranced
to laugh, to cry, that is capable of taking us to heights of delight and depths
of despair almost unimaginable to our predecessors.
This tome, such as it is, is a detailed and superb instructional book in exactly
how to make violins and other evolved string instruments.
To make an instrument that touches the heart and soul of the artist, of the
audience, of humanity – is perhaps one of the greatest callings and honors
anyone could have.
We are humbled to be able to bring you this tome, and are certain that its
highly detailed instructions will allow you, even if a novice to get a good
start at understanding how to collect the tools and begin to make refined
instruments.
No detail is omitted, and in fact, good advice and cautions – and detailed clear
instructions abound in how to do even the smallest detail necessary to make a
nice instrument.
When I was a young boy in the Midwest of the USA … a wonderful musician
descended on our lives, an unexpected event at our little school - and gave us a
concert that to this day brings tears to my eye and emotions I am unable to
express to my heart and soul – his playing of a fine violin with such superb
precision and such depth of feeling that the whole class, without exception, was
deeply affected. The artist cried with delight when we stumbled poorly our
thanks and said something I remember still the greatest reward or honor any
artist can receive is seeing others understand and share the feeling he brings
to his art, to his performance – no other reward or thanks is necessary
That one could make a living creating such joy and sorrow and delight in others
seemed to me then, and now, a wonderful calling.
That of the artisans to make the instruments for the artists to perform with, is
no less.
If you love stringed instruments, whether a professional musician, or a hobbyist
who wants to start making fine stringed instruments, or an experienced violin
maker, there is something here in this wondrous tome for everyone.
