This is a very beautiful fine bone china luncheon plate made by Crown Stafffordshire. The pattern is #5356 'Ye Ole Willow' also later known as 'Chinese Willow'. This is a well decorated translucent porcelain, set on a white body, handpainted and enameled in bright red-orange, yellow, cobalt blue and green. The blue-green rim has various cobalt blue medallions with flora centers. The decorative band frames several of the characteristics of the legendary willow fable scene consisting of pagoda, oriental trees and landscape bridge, mast boat, fence and two doves. Its' Chinese theme is completed by the bamboo-like brown trim edging the plate. The 'Ye Olde Willow' china is entirely handpainted, whereas the "Chinese Willow" is a transferware with hand decoration.
The 'Ye Olde Willow' Crown Staffordshire backstamp dates this china to ca. 1906-1914. This plate is also marked TIFFANY & Co. NEW YORK. The 'Chinese Willow' Crown Staffordshire backstamps date these pieces to ca. 1970-85. This luncheon plate is 9" wide. This plate is in very good condition, no chips, no cracks.
While researching this plate I found an excellent source from "Singhs Virtual Market Place" on Ebay. I have liberally used much of their discription of their own set of 'Ye Olde Willow' and I give them credit. I also recommend their products and would definitely buy from them. Thanks for looking. On May-16-08 at 12:42:48 PDT, seller added the following information:
I have been notified that I have inadvertadly misled buyers in my description. There is no cobalt blue background. This plate also shows much wear although no chips or cracks. I will add another picture and I apologise.
