A RARE antique, circa 1756 - 1774 china plate!
Black transfer printed and handpainted polychrome color enamel in the KAKIEMON STYLE.
KAKIEMON STYLE is based on Japanese decorations of the Kakiemon family. This was very popular in 18th century European factories such as Meissen, Chantilly, Chelsea, Bow and Worcester. This particular plate is black transfer printed and then the outlines were filled in with enamels (hand painted). The popular colors were red, blue, green, and yellow.
There is an impression on the back that is similar to a twisted pretzel or a bow knot. It does not photograph well. We have not been successful in determining the factory that made it. We would appreciate an email from anyone with more information.
The base material of the body is "soft paste".
From Wikipedia:
"Soft-paste porcelain" is a type of a ceramic material, but it lacks a more specific, universally agreed definition. Some writers have used the term for body formulations that combine clay and glass frit, mainly in the production of decorative figures and domestic wares in eighteenth century Europe, while others have used the term more widely to include other soft porcelains as well, such as bone china, Seger porcelain, vitreous porcelain, new Sèvres porcelain, Parian porcelain and soft feldspathic porcelain. The history of soft-paste porcelain dates back to early attempts by European potters to replicate Chinese porcelain at a time when its composition was little understood and its constituent materials were not widely available in the West.
Size: 10-3/8"
Condition: Beautiful decoration, minimal wear, no chips, no cracks, crazed as one might expect from such an old plate. We are so fortunate that this lovely plate has survived for over 200 years. Cat#. ch 003
