We had this violin looked at by an expert who determined that it was German @ 1749. What I know about it is that it belonged to my grandfather (pictured with it @ 1890). He and his sister (on piano) played little local concerts.
I have pieced together the information from what I found in the case. I believe it was sold to my great grandparents @ 1885 (the button on the end says Pat. Nov. 10, 1885, and the chin rest says Pat. Feb. 23 18... C. F. Albert) From this, I deduced that they bought what was then an antique violin for him. It had been repaired/restored. On the back of the string envelope, the numbers 150, 70 and 25= 245 appear. Ihis may indicate that the violin sold for $150 in 1885. The name on the string envelope is Harry M. Curtis, Music Store and Piano Warerooms, 56 Andrew Street, Lynn, Mass. G. A. R. Building. There is also the original rosin box. To be played, this violin would need work. But it is not in terrible shape for wood that may be 250 years old. There are no other markings on it that I can see. The leather case is old, lined with iguana-colored velvet. The leather is in poor condition.
No one in my family plays violin, and I would like it to be with someone who can appreciate it instead of sitting in our attic. I do not, however want to "give" it away as it has sentimental value.
