A fine hand-colored 170 year-old map by John Arrowsmith:

 AFRICA SEPTENTRIONALIS

 

Provenance An Atlas of Ancient Geography Compiled from original Authorities for the Use of Schools  by J. Arrowsmith.  London:  Published by John Arrowsmith . 10 Soho Square. 1840.  All these maps are originals. We do not sell reproductions of any kind.

Sheet:  270 x 220 (10.5" x 8.5")

Narrow margins (+/- 10 mm / 0.5") are present on all the maps. These maps were all 'tipped in' to the atlas, meaning that they could be removed as a single intact sheet. The maps have a single fold in the center.

Condition These maps are in very good condition:
  • There is light and even age-toning.
  • The paper is quite thick and solid.
  • The occasional small closed tear, generally near the fold, has been professionally repaired.
  • The colors are bright and the pages are clean and free of foxing or other significant marks. See the scanned image below. It is just a little smaller than life size and it is very accurate.
  • A few of the titles have been gone over in ink, presumably by the book's one-time owner, young Mr. Henry Richards, whose name appears quite prominently on the title page, along with the date -- June 25, 1842.
Remarks

The atlas from which these maps were taken was a school book, as the title states.

These maps look great framed alone or in groups!
