Art Deco Winter Tree

Handblown Leaded Glass

Winter Tree: This is a 26 x 34-inch stained glass panel of original design, and is the only one in existence. No others will be made. It is comprised of approximately 108 pieces leaded in the Tiffany copper-foil method. The large pieces, clear pebbles, and rondels are mouth-blown by a local artist and the window was handcrafted in my home studio Clear and iridescent glass globs are connected to one another creating a mosaic effect. The moon is clear iridescent textured glass. The background is dark gray artique with a slight olive tinge. The piece is framed in job glass with an oak frame. The overall effect is Art Deco, and it glistens as if it were iced on the coldest day of the year.

There is a mystery to glass. It is a jewel-like substance made from the most ordinary materials that are transformed by fire. It captures light and glows from within. Glass is a form of matter possessing gas, liquid, and solid-state properties. It is most like a super-cooled liquid and should always be held vertically.

Prior to recorded history, man learned to make glass and color it by adding metallic salts and oxides. These minerals capture specific portions of the spectrum allowing the human eye to see various colors. Gold produces stunning cranberry; cobalt makes blues; silver creates yellows and gold; copper makes greens and brick red.

There are many different types of glass used to create art glass pieces. This piece was handcrafted with:

Artique (semi-antique): A transparent glass that resembles antique but is machine-produced. It is of equal thickness, and the effect of the linear striations is created when they are scribed into the hot glass.

Care Instructions:

Be careful not to torque on glass while unwrapping. It is best to balance piece in the palm of your hand when handling. Glass should be left vertical rather than horizontal.

It's advisable to wash after handling, as the piece is leaded.

To clean glass, mild dish soap is best. If oxidation (white spots) should occur on lead, glass wax will restore to it's original sheen.

Although very durable, monofilament should probably be replaced yearly, as the sun stretches it and makes it brittle. A surgeon's knot works well.

Enjoy your glass, it's very durable and can be a family heirloom, if handled gently.
