Synopsis
The Italian Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi and her father Orazio, also an artist, are the subjects of La Pierre's novel set in 17th-century Italy. Artemisia's story begins when she is raped and insists on having her attacker prosecuted: as a result, her close relationship with her father falls apart, not to be mended for many years. Throughout all her trials, however, which include a forced marriage, Artemisia continues to paint, ultimately becoming one of the earliest recognized women artists in the Western world.
