Blue Faience Amulet with Standing Bes, c. 300 B.C.


Standing Nude Bes in turquoise blue faience, his hands by his side, wearing his typical feathers crown.Pierced for suspension.

Bes was variously described as the patron of hunters and of war but, was mainly called upon as the protector of the family and particularly of women and children. He presided over their marriage and was especially revered as a protector during childbirth. Bes was a merry god and his festivals reflected this with much dance and music.
