  Progressive Design for
  Students

  James Ward - 1902

Progressive Design for Students is a fantastic art design book for students published in 1902 in London.  This is a fantastic book that was produced in the middle of the British Arts & Crafts period and toward the end of the Art Nouveau design period resulting in design influences from both schools of design.

As you know, Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau both made wide use of plant forms including leaves, acorns, nuts, blooms, insects, animals, etc.  This book is a great source of incofmation for an artist, antique dealer, or collector of the period.  The book was published by the same company that published design books by M.P. Verneuil and other period artists and teachers.  Whether your interest is William Morris style, Glasgow School design of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, or you lean more toward Roycroft and Gustav Stickley, your styles are covered in this book.

This book details design methodology, techniques, and handiwork in making several types of products including:

  • Border Ornament
  • Ornament Design for Space
  • Brush-Drawing
  • Stencilling (great Japanese stencil reference)
  • Interlacing and Strap Work Ornament

This is a massive course book consisting of 98 pages and 42 illustrations, many of which are full page plates with lots of individual illustrations as you can see by the examples given.

This electronic reproduction was professionally scanned at high resolution, each page was digitally mastered at high resolution. There are no printing restrictions in the document allowing you to print (non commercially) any or all pages at high resolution. That makes this a perfect resource for classroom training, home schooling, or personal study of Arts & Crafts design.  The CD has both PC and Mac Acrobat readers or you can download them free from apple.com.
