"Perspective views and floor plans of three hundred low and medium priced houses and bungalows", as described by the title page. This is an electronic reproduction of the 1916 house plan catalog produced by Frederick J. Drake & Company. The original description is not 100% accurate, though. This actually contains over 150 home designs with a total size of 322 pages.
This book contains floor plans of several styles of house plans including Arts & Crafts style bungalows, California mission style, four square houses, small cottages, Victorian design, and architectural details of a mix of these. In addition to the plans, which all contain basic dimensions, each floor plan is accompanied by a perspective view of the house with exterior trim, porches, dormers, etc. Whether you are a builder, remodeling an old house, or just interested in the architectural style and history, this is a great reference.
The original book was published in 1916 and is very similar to the floor plans published by William Radford (later to become the Montgomery Ward House Plans), the Sears house plans and house kits, and the Gustav Stickley Craftsman house plans. These were all sold at the same time in a similar fasion and were direct competitors. Then, as now, you would select the plan you were interested in and mail in your money for a full set of construction blue prints for you or your builder.
If you are interested in building a house based on these plans, you can determine the actual dimensions of each room from the drawings. If you use one of the home architecture programs or a more professional package such as Chief Architect, you can draw the walls, windows, etc., and the software will calculate the placement of studs, beams, etc. With the procspective view of the house, you can create a roof plan, too. For as little as $30, you can buy software allowing you to lay out these houses, do 3D rendering, etc. If you progress further and are looking to build, you should talk with an architect or structural engineer to review your plans.
This electronic reproduction was professionally scanned at high resolution and each page was digitally mastered. There are no printing restrictions in the document allowing you to print (non commercially) any or all pages at high resolution. That makes this a perfect resource for classroom training, home schooling, or personal study of Arts & Crafts and architectural design. This will be delivered on Compact Disc.
