| | Album notes | Though AT HIS BEST contains no liner notes, making it difficult to determine when it was recorded, the album's contents are so impressive that date of origin hardly seems to matter. Jones, the dean of classic country singers, is in fine form here, his voice smooth, rich, and expressive-the standard by which most male country singers are judged. Jones' subject of choice on this album is heartache, but his honky-tonk-heaven voice makes the anguish worthwhile. AT HIS BEST contains such classics as "I Threw Away the Rose," Lefty Frizzell's "Saginaw, Michigan," and the show-stopping "He Stopped Loving her Today." If you want an introduction to Jones, AT HIS BEST will do nicely.
