Illustrated Atlas of Berks County, Penna Reading Publishing House, 1876, 94 pages This publication is a combination Atlas and History of Berks County, Pennsylvania, PA reproduced in PDF format on CD. Pennsylvania county atlases are expensive and difficult to find, but here you can have the information at your disposal for a fraction of the cost. The publication begins with a history of the county, brief historical descriptions of each of its townships, and finally a history of Reading. The township sketches detail a few highlights from the township's history including mention of some of the early settlers. The township maps provide a detail of the township boundaries, school district boundaries, towns, roads, and topography of the county, including streams and mountains. They also show where homes, churches, and businesses were located. But the most desirable quality of these maps is the notation of the County's residents, providing a record of who owned land and where they lived. Interspersed between the township maps are dozens of lithographs showing the residences of prominent citizens or important institutions or businesses of the county. Also a nice feature of this atlas is a business directory of each township and major borough at the end of the publication.
