I worked on the Atocha project in the mid eighties, Watched as ingots of silver and coins encased in sea life were brought into the Key West museum. This is the most famed of all SPANISH SHIPWRECKS, documented by National Geographic, full of the joy of discovery and the tragedy of death. This boat , The Nuestra Senora De Atocha, sank in 1622 with an estimated 200 million dollars in treasure. Mel Fisher, his family and assorted crew of experts and divers found the wreck in 1985. There has been a great amount of treasure recovered over all these years since but, as with most treasure, it remains in the hands of people of generous means. I wanted to share a bit of my experience with those who might not otherwise be able to access such rarities so I made precise molds of coins recovered from the Atocha, cast them in pewter and finished each to an authentic patina. The feel, look and weight is almost indiscernible from the original silver coins. Please be clear that these are reproductions, even experts will have to do a double-take when they first see these.
