A beautiful Australian Pottery teapot in the form of an oak barrel- with intertwining vine and grape motif. The production of these oversized teapots in a variety of ornamental patterns, and finished in a treacle like brown ‘Rockingham’ glaze- was something of a stock in trade for late Colonial Australian Potteries, and attributing a maker to this example is not without difficulty. Aspects are akin to Bendigo- such as the clay used, whilst similar teapots were made in some of the Brunswick Potteries not to mention the larger Sydney firms of the era 1880-1910 An impressed 12 is the only makers marking I can see- which of course helps but a little!

It would be a thin collection indeed if you expected these Early utilitarian items to be in flawless condition. This teapot is better than most you will find- with some chipping about the spout- and a small shallow flake from the edge of the lid and another insignificant flake under the pot. The spout is minor and could be repaired whilst I doubt one would bother as it displays beautifully as shown. NO CRACKS! Some white enamel or other paint marks to one side should clean off ok if required.
