About Me
    • This is a very beautiful Marked Austrian Shaving Mug!
    • Measures 4" High
    • Very good condition..Minimal loss of gold trim and only two tiny fleabites on the rim near the handle area are the only mentions. (see photo # 3 in green area) Wonderful strong and true colors with gold highlights throughout.
    • Seven drainage holes inside allow water drainage from shaving brush.
    • Marked base with crescent and star would suggest that this piece may have been  produced in the Turkish or Arab quarter of a large city in Austria, possibly Istanboul? The crescent and star were a symbol of good fortune.
    • And now, a bit about the differences between moustache cups and shaving mugs:
    • "A shaving mug was an entirely different item with a totally different purpose. Shaving mugs were used by Victorian gentlemen to remove unwanted facial hair--in other words--to SHAVE. They did often have a divider across the mug that frequently had three or more small round holes through which the soapy water drained into the mug. This occurred while a shaving brush, soap and razor were wielded by a gentleman or his barber to remove his whiskered growth. Many shaving mugs had no divider at all! But these items--no matter how designed--were used only in shaving!" ~Nibblesm80~
