Secretariat.com in conjunction with The Secretariat Foundation is proud to offer the auction of a documented authentic shoe and halter worn by Academy Award as a stallion at Claiborne Farm. Academy award, a regally-bred stakes winning son of Secretariat out of a Mr. Prospector mare, scored his largest victory in the 1991 Manhattan Handicap on the turf. Being a son of Secretariat with a proven aptitude for racing on grass, Academy Award was considered a prime stud prospect and retired to Claiborne following the Manhattan with career earnings of $221,003. As recently as 2006 Academy Award was one of only a few Secretariat sons still actively standing at stud.
The shoe set and halter were obtained from Claiborne Farm on August 27, 1998. The shoe set rests on a 9" x 12" solid walnut wood plaque with corresponding brass nameplate. It is interesting to note that as a stallion Academy Award wore a bar shoe on his left front hoof. The leather halter with polished brass nameplate is in well-worn yet excellent condition. Both items have been preserved in their original condition, carefully maintained and stored in a protected environment and are accompanied by a cataloged letter of provenance signed by Penny Chenery and a Claiborne Farm representative.
The Secretariat Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization created by Secretariat's owner, Penny Chenery to assist the Thoroughbred industry in the areas of research, rehabilitation, retirement, and recognition. Long a supporter of many charities and research programs, Mrs. Chenery named the foundation after her great champion for a specific purpose - to use Secretariat's enduring appeal to bring greater awareness to the many causes found within the equine-related community.
