Keep your favorite automatic watches wound and set - ready to go when you are - with the HM Watches Tri-Winder Automatic Watch Winder.

Despite the greater accuracy and reliability of quartz watches, the most expensive and sought after watches are still the tried and true mechanical watches. The most prized of these have automatic movements which are powered by the kenetic motion of the wearer. Due to improvements in the production of these watches, even watch enthusiasts of modest means may own one or more automatics. Despite the inherent beauty of their mechanics, we have all been frustrated by the need to manually wind them daily unless they are constantly worn. For those of us with several autos, "winding time" has become a daily ritual. This not only ensures that the watch is set, but is also recommended to keep the watch in proper running order. Fortunately there is a more efficient way to accomplish this - an electric automatic watch winder. Watch winders come as singles, duals/doubles, tri/triples (featured here), quads, to wall units which house dozens at once. They rotate either clockwise or counter-clockwise (or both), and thus wind the rotor fixed to the back of the movement. Your automatics will be ready when you are.

Some general thoughts to ponder about winders:
Despite their name, 'watch winders' do not actually wind the watch. Instead, they are designed to maintain the charge of a watch that is already wound. In other words, if you place an unwound watch on a winder overnight, it will still be unwound when you wake up in the morning.

Winders are available in several price ranges. A top of the line dual winder (e.g. Orbita) retails for $600-$1500 or more. While much can be said about getting what you pay for, this amount is out of reach for many buyers who would rather invest the money in a fine watch. For the price of one of those, you can buy up to a dozen of ours. The winder featured here normally retails for about $250. We can offer this price because we purchase them direct from the factory.

Q. What features should I look for in a winder?

  • The ability to select a specific number of turns per day (TPD) and the direction. For instance, most Rolex watches (with the exception of the Daytona chronograph) require 650 bi-directional turns (spins clockwise, then turns counter-clockwise). Other watches will require 800 clockwise-only or another combination. Many low-end winders specify a turn & rest period duration, but do not list the equivalent number of turns.
  • Avoid any winders that do not have rest periods. A few winders out there (most have been chased out of the market by angry mobs carrying pitchforks) do not have rest periods and continually spin. This is bad for the watch as it can overwind the main spring.
  • Look for a warranty of at least 90 days. Anything less is junk.
  • Make sure to know the circumference of the pillow that holds the watch (usually specified as a range in inches). Many winders (particularly those that hold two watches on a single turntable) have very small pillows with a maximum circumference of about 7.25".
  • Make sure the power source is suited for your locale (110 volts vs 220 volts or other)

There are some other features that are desireable, but are not necessarily deal breakers if not present:

  • Winders that can run on either batteries or A/C. A nice feature if you're planning on keeping the winder in a safe
  • Turntables that are independently programmable. (Very important if your watches have different turn requirements)
  • Extra storage space for quartz watches or manually wound watches

Q. What are your thoughts about winders that hold two watches on the same turntable/rotator?
A. We used to carry them, but we don't any longer. They have an obvious economic benefit, but are only suitable under very specific criteria:

  • The two watches MUST have the same turn requirements (e.g. 800 clockwise)
  • The watches must be small enough to fit at the same time or risk rubbing against each other. The watch case diameters typically need to be 44mm or smaller (including crown).
  • If the watches have a metal bracelet, the bracelet likely needs to be 7.25" or less in circumference as the pillows that hold the watches tend to be smaller (not so much a problem for leather  bands which can be adjusted to fit a smaller pillow)

Additionally, the motors tend to burn out quicker due to the stress placed on them (torsion) when there is only one watch on the turntable.

Q. How can I find out the TPD requirements for my watch(es)?
A.
If you have questions regarding a specific brand, feel free to contact us. Send us a message with the make, model, and movement (if known) of your watch, and we will do what we can to assist you. If the TBD and direction are unknown (believe it or not, some manufacturers don't know as well), the instructions below will provide a guideline:

1)  Place your fully wound automatic watch on your winder (wind by hand).

2)  Set your winder to bi-directional winding at 1000 TPD.

If this setting doesn't keep your watch wound, go to step 3.

If this setting keeps your watch wound, decrease TPD to the lowest setting that still keeps your watch wound.

3)  Set your winder to clockwise winding at 1000 TPD.

If this setting doesn't keep your watch wound, go to step 4.

If this setting keeps your watch wound, decrease TPD to the lowest setting that still keeps your watch wound.

4)  Set your winder to counter-clockwise (anti-clockwise) winding at 1000 TPD.

If this setting doesn't keep your watch wound, please contact the manufacturer. Links to most high-end watch manufacturer's websites are available (just send us an e-mail)

If this setting keeps your watch wound, decrease TPD to the lowest setting that still keeps your watch wound.

Please note:  Most watches that wind bi-directionally will be able to wind at all rotational settings:  Both, CW, CCW.  Watches that wind uni-directionally will only be able to wind in one direction, either CW or CCW.
