Avery Universal Pin Case Brass Needlecase
Genuine Avery Brass Universal Pin Case as shown on page 43 of Mann & Horowitz.

William Avery was born into the needle business in the early 1800s. Not satisfied with the humdrum of needle manufacture, he indulged his love of art and drawing by designing whimsical brass pieces, ostensibly for the storage of needles. Although many of them were not really the most convenient way to store needles, they were delightful in their many fancy forms, and are highly collectible and sought after. There were other brass needlecases made by other manufacturers as well, but the word AVERY has become a generic term for any figural brass needlecase. For more information on this fascinating topic, I recommend a fine book by Estelle Horowitz and Ruth Mann: VICTORIAN BRASS NEEDLECASES.
1 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 1" tall. Excellent condition with both sliders operating smoothly. A very rare piece.
