BAKONGO - AFRICAN NAIL FETISH FIGURE - CONGO # 10526

Tribal art of the Bakongo peoples who live in both Congo Republics and Angola. Such figures or Nkishi are made by a sculptor who works together with a nganga or diviner who completes the figure by placing magical ingredients in an abdominal cavity made by the sculptor. The body of the fetish is completely covered by nails and other metal objects driven into its surface; these nails and objects mark each appeal made to the spirit embodied in it.
